About the program

We train laser engineers – specialists who create, develop, and implement laser technologies.

Here, you’ll learn to operate laser sources, assemble and set up equipment, model laser-material interactions, conduct experiments and calculations, develop prototypes, and incorporate solutions into laser systems.

You can apply the skills learned in the program in fields such as:

– Industry: development of laser complexes and technologies for micro- and nano-processing (cutting, welding, marking, cleaning, material strengthening, and creation of functional coatings);
– Medicine: design, configuration, and maintenance of laser equipment for surgery, cosmetology, ophthalmology, and diagnostic devices;
– R&D: use of lasers for measurements and material studies and development of laser and photon technologies;
– Smart production: automation and robotization of laser processes using AI and machine learning.

International students can study tuition-free by securing a scholarship through the Rossotrudnichestvo federal agency as part of a Russian Government scholarship. Applications can be submitted to the Rossotrudnichestvo office at a Russian Embassy/Consulate or an office of the Russian Center of Science and Culture.

FAQ

What are my career prospects?

Depending on where your interests lie, you can become a researcher, a programmer, an engineering technologist, or a developer. We cooperate with top universities and both Russian and international producers and suppliers of laser systems. If you wish to devote yourself to science, you can join ITMO’s International Research Laboratory for Micro- and Nanotechnology Lasers as early as your first year. The laboratory is equipped with highly accurate measurement tools and modern laser systems.

What exams do I need to take?

To enroll in the program, you will need to pass exams in the following subjects:

Russian;
Mathematics;
Physics (optional).

Can I apply online?

Yes. If you want to apply online, you need to submit scanned copies of all the required documents via your personal account on the admissions website. You can learn how to do it here.

Can I study abroad?

ITMO University holds an internal competition for academic exchange applicants twice a year: in September (for the spring semester) and in February (for the fall semester). Bachelor’s students are eligible to participate in the contest, starting with their second year. Additionally, ITMO often hosts international events that provide opportunities for seeking out internships abroad.
