About the program

This Bachelor’s program offers project-based training with an emphasis on the study of nanostructured materials and respective energy-efficient devices. Students will learn to develop technologies for energy saving, ecology, and biomedicine, and as early as their second year students can join ongoing projects at the International Research and Educational Center for Physics of Nanostructures or the program’s industrial partners. Thanks to the program’s interdisciplinary approach, students will receive fundamental knowledge not only in physics and mathematics, but also biology, materials science, chemistry, and medicine. Additionally, you will master laser technologies, microscopy and spectroscopy methods, and AI applications. This knowledge will be useful in creating energy-efficient technologies, advanced solar energy, targeted drug delivery, sensor systems for environmental monitoring, and so on.

I got lucky with my individual educational track. Right now I am enrolled in the Master’s program Physics and Technology of Nanostructures, which is a continuation of the Bachelor’s program Physics of Nanostructures. The curriculum is based on the work of ITMO’s International Research and Educational Center for Physics of Nanostructures, which makes it possible for Bachelor’s students to get involved with research projects early on. As for me, I found scientific work appealing, so by my second year I was officially employed in this field. Since our team is full of young people, I got into the swing of things in no time.

At school, physics and chemistry were among my favorite subjects, and I took exams in both of them. So, when choosing a university I was looking for something that combines the two. My individual educational track made it possible for me to find exactly what I needed, and now I research low-temperature chemical synthesis of nanostructures. It's a collaborative process: the physicists do their part, I do mine, and we all learn something new.

The interdisciplinary nature of this program allows me to get better at multiple subjects simultaneously, instead of focusing on one specific area of study. All of this serves to produce specialists that are in high demand on the job market. For example, this program includes a track that combines physics and biology to study the use of nanostructures in medicine. It includes both research activities and special chemistry and biology-related subjects that students can choose to add to their curriculum.
