About the program

The first of its kind in Russia, the Master’s program in art & science offers training in one of the most promising fields of contemporary art.

APPROACH

The program brings together the best of experimental teaching methods and a project- and practice-oriented approach. Our lecturers are leading Russian and international artists, curators, theorists, and experts in cultural project management. The program is headed by Olga Vad, a curator of new media art and an associate professor at ITMO. We teach our students to view scientific breakthroughs through an artistic lens, use them as inspiration for art projects, work with and visualize scientific data, and apply different creative strategies and modern technologies in their practice.

UNIQUE FEATURES

The educational program is currently the only one in Russia that provides deep immersion into the scientific environment and work at the university’s laboratories to artists and humanities majors. Studies are held entirely in English, in a multicultural environment.

SPECIALIZATIONS

As part of the program, students can choose one of the following specializations:
– Digital Worlds;
– Robotic and Interactive Art;
– Bioart, Biodesign, and Living Materials.

During their studies, students will work on independent and team projects, present their artwork to broad audiences at semester and report exhibitions, and become part of the creative community.

LEARNING FORMAT

Classes are held in a hybrid format (both online and offline); however, students won’t be able to combine their studies with a full-time job as most classes are practice-oriented and require them to visit the university in person.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

At the core of the program is an interdisciplinary approach with a focus on experience exchange between students and experts in different fields. It is designed for students of varied backgrounds, be that art, technologies, or natural sciences.

    Before my Master’s, I had conservative views on art and believed that it’s impossible to be a great artist without an academic education. Yet when I got into the university I met several tech majors who made quality, well-designed, and evocative projects. This reprogramed my understanding of what an artist and a non-artist is. My next insight was 3D technologies. I learned that there are many tools – 3D scanning, modeling, and others – that are quick and easy to master and apply in your art. The fact that the program is in English motivated me as well: it’s a real challenge and step forward in my education.
