About the program

Big Data and Machine Learning is an international English-taught Master’s program that will help you master big data analysis and ML methods, as well as give you a thorough overview of the full-cycle development process, from preparing datasets and building ML pipelines to scaling up and implementing the developed models. The program pays close attention to large language models (LLMs) and other generative AI architectures. Here, you will learn to apply LLMs for the industry’s needs – from smart assistants to multi-agent role systems with varied architectures and behavior strategies. But that’s not it yet – you will also learn how to develop ML and LLM solutions, lead teams, and implement innovative technologies in business processes. Moreover, you will take part in research projects, collaborate with big data experts, keep up with the latest trends in the field, and intern at R&D laboratories.

In my third year as a Bachelor’s student, I developed an interest in machine learning. I started with open courses but then realized I needed more advanced training and started looking for Master’s programs. ITMO offered several programs in the field; I opted for Big Data and Machine Learning as it was an international program. What I loved the most is that the program offered lots of different topics and fields in its curriculum: it was true for both soft skills courses (e.g., Creative Technologies) and even for when picking a research topic. The program met my expectations because I managed to put my skills into action, started to build my career and integrated into the environment where I needed to acquire and keep my knowledge current. I conducted my research as an employee at the laboratory under the National Center for Cognitive Research. Thus, my thesis and papers corresponded to the lab’s projects. By the end of my studies, I had a great CV and knowledge that helped me get a job as an ML specialist at a research department. As a current PhD student, I recommend future students be open to new opportunities offered by the university, not be afraid to try their hand at new tasks to acquire unique experience, and follow research advances made by ITMO students and scientists.
