About the program

The Master's program trains students to produce and implement comprehensive solutions for preventing industrial pollution, optimizing resource management, and advancing the transition to a circular economy.

The program will perfectly fit students with backgrounds in the following fields: ecology, environmental management, technosphere safety, industrial ecology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, and other adjacent natural and technical sciences. The training is focused on studying and applying the best available technologies, the principles of clean production, sustainable waste management, and green construction. Students will master environmental design, monitoring, and modeling techniques to prevent systemic environmental risks instead of dealing with the aftermath.

Professional tracks

  • Environmental Engineering (in Russian)
The specialization offers an in-depth study of engineering methods for environmental protection. You’ll learn to design and select high-efficiency systems for industrial wastewater treatment, gas and dust emission, and waste management, ensuring resource- and energy-efficient production.

  • Clean Production and Environmental Design (in Russian and English)
The training focuses on management and project solutions. Students will master environmental management systems (EMS), product life cycle assessment (LCA) methods, and the principles of industrial symbiosis and environmental certification to develop competitive and safe technologies.

  • Ecobiotechnology (in Russian)
This research and applied track centers on applying biological processes and living organisms for solving environmental tasks. Within this specialization, students work at laboratories where they gain hands-on experience of developing technologies for soil and water bioremediation and atmospheric purification.

  • Urban Ecology (only for subject area 20.04.01, in Russian)
By specializing in sustainable development of urban systems, students will explore modern approaches to municipal waste management, environmental monitoring methods using GIS technologies, landscape design, and phytoremediation to improve the quality of the urban environment. Here is the list of entrance exams for the Industrial Ecology Master's program.

I chose Industrial Ecology because it has majors within it that I wanted to study. I was looking for an urban ecology or environmental design major and found it in industrial ecology with great topics and subjects! I studied in the specialty of Environmental Design, in this program it was interesting for me to get useful knowledge on how to create and certify eco-friendly products, understanding a product's entire life cycle to minimize environmental harm from start to finish. The program was interesting for me because it offers enormous contributions towards building a greener future!

FAQ

What is the entrance exam for the program like?
The entrance exam is held online via Zoom. Students have an hour to prepare their answers to two randomly chosen questions (see the list on the Russian version of the page). You will be provided a template in which you will need to write a short summary of your answer – then, you will present your answer and discuss it with the exam committee. The committee can also ask you why you want to join the program. The program offers a number of exam-free enrollment opportunities, including the Portfolio contest. You can learn more about them here.

What is the program’s language of instruction?
You can study both in English and Russian. In your first semester, you will need to choose what language your courses will be in; then, in the second semester you will need to decide on your module and the language of your module. Cleaner Production and Environmental Design is the only English-taught module within the program.
