About the program

Infochemistry is a promising new field of experimental science at the intersection of chemistry, biology, computer science, and mathematics.

The first and thus far the only program in Russia offers a science-focused and interdisciplinary educational approach to train highly-qualified specialists at the intersection of chemistry and chemical engineering with biology, biotechnology, mathematics, computer science, and even robotics. Students of the program actively participate in interdisciplinary projects: for instance, related to computer modeling and analysis of complex chemical and biological systems, biotechnologies, creation of smart biomaterials and diagnostic systems, as well as modeling and analysis of personalized tracking in medicine and nutrition.

This Bachelor’s program offers high-quality education in IT and chemistry, including such branches as chemoinformatics, chemometrics, triboinformatics, infochemistry, artificial intelligence in chemistry, and chemical technologies. Students can improve their language skills in classes by international lecturers at the university or during internships at the world’s top universities and research centers.

Specialists with an interdisciplinary background at the intersection of chemistry, computer science, robotics, and biotechnology are in high demand at leading research institutions in Russia and abroad. They can work at chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and medical productions, laboratories and hospitals affiliated with research centers, as well as leading research centers in chemistry and information technologies, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals. Graduates can work in cutting-edge fields of science and technology.

    For my thesis, I developed novel materials that could trap active oxygen radicals and deliver them to a target, and my colleagues and I even published three Scopus-indexed articles on the topic. Yet one of the best things I did was take part in developing educational programs. I contributed to three programs (two Master’s and one Bachelor’s) that have already welcomed their first students. Now, I can proudly call myself a curator of educational programs at ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center. For over a year and a half, I've been an engineer and executor of several grant projects in drug delivery and diagnostic sensors. I twice won an increased stipend from the university, and now I’m pursuing my PhD at ITMO.

What can I do with a degree in infochemistry?
Our graduates find employment as chemists, programmers, engineers, researchers, lecturers, as well as specialists in a variety of sectors, including the quality control of products and processes; the development and implementation of innovative technologies and products at enterprises; research and R&D projects; fundamental and applied studies at laboratories; teaching at universities; digitalization and robotization of chemical technologies; and the creation and launch of their own products.

What is infochemistry?
Infochemistry is a new interdisciplinary field of experimental science that brings together chemistry, biology, computer science, and mathematics. Students of the Infochemistry Bachelor’s program study fundamental and applied chemistry, chemical technologies, biotechnology, micro- and cellular biology, computer science, physics, and even art.

What’s the difference between subject areas Chemical Engineering and Chemistry?
The subject area 18.03.01 Chemical Engineering is practice-oriented and involves the study of chemical production processes and technologies, including the synthesis of chemical substances and the development of new materials and technological solutions. Whereas the subject area 04.03.01 Chemistry is of a more fundamental nature and is focused on the study of the structure of substances, chemical patterns, and scientific methods. Both subject areas offer fully identical curricula, with the only differences being the topics of project activities, term papers, and graduation theses. Chemical engineering students solve applied tasks regarding technology and material development and chemistry students focus on fundamental research.
