About the program

This program trains next-gen researchers and engineers who can develop green technologies for the energy and industry sectors.

It is designed for chemists, engineers, ecologists, and technologists wishing to work at the intersection of science and innovation. You will learn to design smart catalysts and sorbents, develop materials for batteries and hydrogen energy, and optimize chemical processes through transforming waste into valuable resources.

From day one, you will be able to work at the university’s laboratories and complete projects for industry partners, as well as intern at enterprises and work in international research teams.

Students of the program can opt to enroll in the track Modern Aspects of Oil and Gas Industry implemented jointly with Gazprom Neft.

Students are selected for the track during their first semester following their internships at the Gazprom Neft-ITMO Research and Education Center and defense of cases provided by the company.

    Getting into the program was quite a challenge, but also an opportunity to try something new. What struck me in the first place is that students can work on their projects from day one. I was happy to discover that ITMO values academic freedom and growth to such an extent. Personally, I was engaged at Energy Lab where I studied hydrogels, as well as their structure and buffering abilities. Additionally, I also worked with cells and bacteria to assess the efficacy of the hydrogel I developed on chronic wounds. By the way, I stayed at the laboratory as a PhD student. It’s fascinating that during my studies I had the chance to boost my soft skills: I mentor school students at Sirius Leto and organize national workshops by our laboratory. I was also glad to become a part of an inspiring team of colleagues. Thanks to my personal track, I was able to attend a range of competitions and conferences – what a valuable experience! One of my favorite things about our laboratory is that here people have an excellent sense of humor and can joke about any topic. And thanks to my colleagues, I developed my soft skills in addition to English, which I was able to improve while studying in this program.

FAQ

The program’s language of instruction is English. Is it difficult to study like this? How fluent should I be to complete the program?
The program is indeed in English. The recommended level of proficiency for the program is B1-B2. To apply, you will need to prove your English level during a brief interview with the program’s instructors. As an option you can also submit your language proficiency certificate. You shouldn’t be afraid to enroll in an English-taught program. You will be surrounded by sympathetic people, both your lecturers and fellow students, who will be willing to give you a hand if you experience any difficulties. As practice shows, students don’t have much trouble related to the language barrier.

How are students selected for projects?
All students need to give an oral presentation in English, in which they should speak about themselves and their academic background, as well as state their desire to join a laboratory of their choice. Apart from the laboratory, you can also express an interest in joining an ongoing project or presenting your own one. Based on your presentation and request, curators of your educational program will allocate you to a laboratory or project of your choice.

What's the best way to choose my soft skills courses?
The university offers a variety of soft skills courses so in order to choose the right ones, you should study their content carefully. Optional courses within this program are delivered exclusively in English. A good rule of thumb when selecting courses is to read some of the course materials in advance or refer to the manager of your educational program for advice.

What projects are students involved in?

Students primarily implement their projects at Energy Lab or Flexible Electronics and Robotics lab (FEAR Lab). For the majority of projects, their key field of research is energy. Alternatively, you can work on your own ideas with the assistance of industry partners.

Here are some of the projects our students are working on:
  • High-entropy Alloy Nanoparticles Produced by Carbothermal Shock for Application in CO2 Conversion and Water Splitting;
  • Nanostructured Systems for Water Purification and Heavy Metals Sorption;
  • Electrocatalytic Conversion of Biomass Oil into High-Value Compounds, etc.

What does the entrance exam include?
The exam is held online. It lasts 150 minutes and includes a test and interview. Applicants will need to complete a two-part paper that consists of two sections; the first one contains four questions on general and physical chemistry – students have to answer all of them;, and the second part of the paper contains six questions, of which students should be able to answer at least three. You will have 150 minutes to finish the paper. Your interview will be scheduled on a date convenient for you and the committee. Within 30 minutes, you will need to briefly introduce yourself, explain why you chose the program, and speak about your background and academic interests. All the necessary links will be forwarded to you by the program’s manager once you register on the website, choose the entrance exam as your enrollment option, and pick the dates of your exam and interview.

Can I attend lectures held for students of other specializations?
Yes, you can, but they should be in English and should not interfere with your studies.

What will my schedule be like? Is it possible to work while studying?
Core courses are delivered on-site while optional ones can be available online. The program is module-based, meaning that students are able to combine their studies with a remote job.

Can I opt for organic chemistry for my project? Does the institute study catalysts for oil refining and petrochemical processes – or is going to?
Within our program, you are free to pick or propose any scientific or applied project and try yourself in a new field; the only rule being that your project must be applicable in energy technologies.
