About the program

Using machine learning algorithms, big data processing tools, and computer modeling technologies, you will be able to predict the behavior of complex systems in chemistry and biology. This opens the possibility for creating and programming new materials, testing systems, digital twins, autonomous industrial robots and lab assistants, flexible electronics, artificial leather, smart clothing, functional foods, and more.

During your studies, you will gain a deep understanding of chemistry, biotechnology, math, and computer science and technologies. You may also choose to take courses on disciplines that are closely related to chemistry and adjacent fields, such as chemoinformatics, chemometrics, triboinformatics, and chemotronics. From day one, you will take part in real projects from research organizations and industrial companies.

Renowned educational institutions from the US, UK, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, and Israel are also among the program’s partners. Students can apply for exchange programs at foreign research centers that can last anywhere from three months to a year and a half. There is also a separate biannual semester-long exchange program which is open to all ITMO students.

Graduates of the program can work as chemists, software developers, engineers, researchers, lecturers, or entrepreneurs.

- development and integration of innovative technologies and solutions into manufacturing processes;
- quality management of products and processes;
- digitalization and robotization of chemical technologies;

- research and R&D;
- theoretical and applied laboratory studies;

    For my thesis, I developed novel materials that could trap active oxygen radicals and deliver them to a target, and my colleagues and I even published three Scopus-indexed articles on the topic. Yet one of the best things I did was take part in developing educational programs. I contributed to three programs (two Master’s and one Bachelor’s) that have already welcomed their first students. Now, I can proudly call myself a curator of educational programs at ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center. For over a year and a half, I've been an engineer and executor of several grant projects in drug delivery and diagnostic sensors. I twice won an increased stipend from the university, and now I’m pursuing my PhD at ITMO.

FAQ

Can students work while studying and is it possible to work at the university?
Yes, all of the program’s students either work at partner organizations or at ITMO University’s Infochemistry Scientific Center.

What can I do with a degree in infochemistry?
Our graduates find employment as chemists, programmers, engineers, researchers, lecturers, as well as specialists in a variety of sectors, including the quality control of products and processes; the development and implementation of innovative technologies and products at enterprises; research and R&D projects; fundamental and applied studies at laboratories; teaching chemistry or computer science at colleges and universities; digitalization and robotization of chemical technologies; and the creation and launch of their own products. They can also pursue their academic careers both in Russia and abroad.

This program has English as its only language of instruction. What does that actually mean? How does it impact the learning process?
Every lecture, seminar, practical, and laboratory class is taught in the English language. Students are also expected to use English in their assignments, as well as during exams and tests. The best research is then published and discussed, so being proficient in English is really useful. This format helps students to gradually become a part of the English-speaking professional community. It should be noted that none of the program’s staff are native speakers, so they are all very understanding of the struggle to overcome the language barrier.

What is infochemistry?
Infochemistry is a new experimental field of science at the intersection of chemistry, biology, computer science, and math. This Master’s program is the only one in Russia that combines chemical research with biology, biotechnologies, math, computer science, and even robotics to train its students. The Infochemistry Master’s program includes courses on the fundamentals of chemistry, applied chemistry and chemical technology, biotechnology, microbiology and cytology, math, computer science, and the use of artificial intelligence in infochemical research and development.
