About the program
The Master’s program provides you with the choice of two tracks: applied and academic. While students of the applied track will focus more deeply on developing and expanding their expertise in software development, machine learning, and distributed systems, students of the academic track conduct large-scale research and prep for their PhD programs in Russia or abroad. Students of either track can complete the program within one year.The applied track lets you build a personalized learning track from 50+ courses offered by the Institute of Applied Computer Science. Thus, students are free to pick courses they genuinely enjoy that are beneficial for their future career. Additionally, they can also combine their studies with a job and defend their thesis in the form of a practical project developed with their employer.
Within the academic track, you will get to do research beginning in your first semester and have a published paper at a major conference by the end of your studies. Among your teachers will be experts in the theory of competitive and distributed systems, discrete optimization and formal methods, information and coding theory, as well as machine learning. However there’s also an option to find a supervisor outside the university – though, it’s important to discuss the topic of your thesis beforehand. What’s more, you will also have a couple of optional courses, such as Journal Club, Academic Writing, Mathematical Statistics, and Data Visualization, which are all meant to navigate you through all the stages of research: from objective-setting to publication. You will also have a chance to work on a research project from an IT company during your studies.

Graduates of the applied track can become mid-level software or data engineers at major IT companies, whereas graduates of the academic track will be ready to pursue their PhDs in Russia or abroad.
